Does these numbers make these countries the best sports countries in the world? If you only look at the Olympic medals standing you would say yes. But what if you consider that China has 13 billion inhabitants and New Zealand only has 4 million to select there athletes from.
In my opnium you should also consider the amount of inhabitants if you want know how a country is performing comparing to other countries.
I was curious what would happen if you would make an Olympic medals standing based on the population size.
To achive this I used Qlikview to combine data from countrycode.org and the Olympic medal standings from Wikipedia to be able to follow this during the tournement. This results in a totally different Medal Standing.
The charts below shows how the Medal Standing will look if you divide the medals (gold, silver, bronze) by the population (showing countries with more then 10 medals)
Then it is Hungary with 8 gold medals and not even 10 million inhabitants the best. Also New Zealand with 3 gold medals with only 4 million peolpe is much more impressive then 36 gold medals with 13 Billion Chinese.
From the same website I combined the square kilometers with the medals per country. This way it is easy to show the medals compaired to the size of the country. This results in the following charts.
“Waar een klein land groot in kan zijn”
